How to Donate a Car Without a Title
Lost your pink slip? Don't panic. You can still donate your vehicle, but there are a few extra steps depending on your state.
The Importance of the Title
The vehicle title (often called a "pink slip") is the legal document proving your ownership of the car. To officially transfer the vehicle to Patriotic Hearts or our auction partners, a clear title is typically required.
What If I Lost It?
If you have lost the title but are the registered owner, you still have options:
- Apply for a Duplicate Title: The absolute best and cleanest method is to visit your local DMV website and file an Application for a Duplicate Title (in California, this is Form REG 227). Once you receive the duplicate, you can sign it over to us.
- State-Specific Exceptions: In certain states, if the vehicle is older than a specific model year (e.g., older than 15 years in some jurisdictions), a title may not be required, and a generic Bill of Sale combined with a current registration card may suffice.
We Can Help
DMV rules vary wildly between Florida, Texas, New York, and California. The easiest thing to do is call our 24/7 hotline. Our title clerks handle thousands of these transactions and can tell you exactly what paperwork your specific state requires.
